The tattoo shows pink anemone-like and peony-style flowers with green leaves surrounding a green pocket watch whose face has a lace pattern. A feather and a fine dotted chain run down the leg, with the chain looping through the composition. The work uses soft pink shading and dark green and black outlines on the skin of a thigh.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The clockmender's widow had sold every stall in the market but the one under the leaking awning, and still she would not pack up while the rain ran off the eaves. Her husband had left her pocket watches in a biscuit tin, each one wrapped in a square of lace he had bought from a woman in Dunmere, and she sat with them on her knees as if they might tick themselves awake.

A boy came up the gutter road with a grey feather stuck in his cap. He said a heron had dropped it at the weir and had looked at him as though it wanted something back. The widow asked what. He didn't know. She gave him a peony from the flower bucket, the last one left after the rain had beaten the petals loose, and told him to carry it to the river and let it float.

Dusk came early under the rain. The boy returned soaked, with the feather gone and his hand empty, saying the water had taken both. The widow opened the tin and lifted out the watch with the cracked glass. Under its lace was a second face no bigger than a thumbnail, its hands stopped at the hour her husband had died. She wound it, and down by the weir something rose off the water with a sound like a wet sheet being shaken out.

She packed up at last. In the morning the stall was gone, and the boy had a feather in his cap again, though he never learned where it came from. The watch kept good time all through the wet week that followed.
