Pocket watch and flowers on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A pocket watch with Roman numerals and a gold-rimmed face sits at the centre, with a beaded chain hanging below it. Two open flowers with yellow centres and green leaves frame the watch, set against a soft red shadow. Bold black outlines and smooth colour fills are used throughout, and the design fills most of the frame on the upper thigh.

The brass hinge of the watch had gone stiff with salt, so Maren Aske worked the lid open with her thumbnail while the wind leaned on the tower. Twenty to nine. The logbook lay open on the sill beside a mug of cold tea, and the lamp below was already warming on its spindle, waiting for the hour she had promised it.

Her father had carried this watch up the same iron stairs for thirty-one years. He wound it every evening with the same two turns, then hung it from its beaded chain on the nail by the door, where the glass caught the lamp's first sweep. She had never liked that nail. She liked the way he tapped the face twice before he trusted it, as if the Roman numerals might argue.
The relief boat should have come at six. Through the salt-dimmed window she could see only the swell running white over the Gannet Stones and, far out, nothing at all. The wild roses her mother had planted at the foot of the wall were dropping their last petals onto the gravel, pale as the paint on the old signal board. Maren checked the watch against the sea clock, then against the sky, and found them agreeing for once.
At nine she pulled the lever herself. The mechanism groaned and the great lens began its slow turn, throwing its beam across the water in a long bright bar. She closed the watch, hung it back on the nail and wrote the time in the book in her father's square hand. Then, because nobody else would ever read it, she added beneath it the one word he never allowed in the log: waiting.
