Rose, pocket watch and key in traditional style
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a red rose in front of a pocket watch with Roman numerals, a gold key with a dotted bead trail curving around the design, and green and purple leaves. Bold black outlines define the rose petals, leaves and watch case, with solid fills and some shading on the petals and metal. The design fills most of the frame against a light skin tone, with a partly visible tattoo at the left edge.

The walled garden at Holloway Court had been Edwin Pell's for forty years, and by the first frost of October his granddaughter Nell knew better than to ask where he kept the key to the glasshouse. It hung on a nail inside the potting shed, beside his pocket watch, and the two had not been parted since the funeral. She took them both down on a Tuesday, because the roses along the south wall had not been pruned and the estate agent was coming on Friday.

The watch had stopped at twenty past four. She remembered him winding it every morning at the back step, thumbing the crown while the kettle ticked on the range, and she had never once asked why it mattered so much to know the exact hour. She wound it now. The hands jerked, caught, and began to move, and under the cracked glass the Roman numerals looked up at her like a row of patient witnesses.
She worked along the wall with secateurs and a biscuit tin for the deadheads. The old climbers had grown up through the trellis and into the gutters, and every cut released a smell of wet bark and something sweeter underneath. Near the bottom of the bed she found the brass bead chain he had strung from the stakes years ago to frighten off the blackbirds, now green at every link and tangled in the thorns. She freed it piece by piece, and the key came with it, still warm from the sun on the shed roof.
By four o'clock the wall was bare except for one stem he had never let her touch. She cut it last, and a single red bloom, late and absurdly full, fell open in her palm. She set it on the face of the watch, where it covered the twelve and the three, and left the hands to go on counting around it.
