The watch you left on my bench has stopped again, and I have not had the heart to open it. The Roman numerals on the dial are worn to nothing at the six, so Mr Gantry will have to send to Coventry for a new face. Until then I am telling the hour by the bells of St Luke's, which run slow whenever the wind is off the river.

Father always said a watch is a small argument with time that the maker wins for a while. I did not understand him until this week, when I sat with the case open under the lamp and watched the escapement breathe. Every wheel turned for the next wheel. Nothing in there knew what the others were for, and still it kept the hour, which is more than most of us manage.

The rose you pressed into the back of the case in June has gone the colour of weak tea. I have not taken it out. Mr Gantry says damp is the death of a movement, so I have wrapped the watch in a square of chamois and put it in the drawer with the spare mainsprings. If you come on Sunday, I will show you how the hands are set, and you can tell me what time it is, and I will not argue.
