Ornamental seahorse on the thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A seahorse is filled with layered floral and mandala-style motifs, with a rosette in the body and a spiral tail. The bold black outlines contrast with pale skin, and fine dotted shading adds depth within the petals and scales. The design runs vertically along the outer thigh, with a blue surface and a partly visible person's leg in the background.

The lamp on the Marigold has gone out again, so it falls to you to climb the cabin roof in the dusk with a rag and a tin of paraffin while Uncle Fen stands below pretending to hold the rope. The river is brown and quick past Cressing Lock. Somewhere downstream a dog is barking at a moored coal boat that nobody has lived on since spring.

Fen calls up that the carved seahorse on the tiller plate was his mother's, scrolled and flowered like a Sunday hat, and that a seahorse is the only fish that carries its young. You tell him that is no reason to let a lamp go out. He gives the short bark he uses when he is pleased with himself and passes up a spare wick with a heel of bread wrapped round it.
When the flame catches, you see it doubled on the black water: the seahorse bowing over its own reflection, its curled tail sinking into the mud of the bank. Fen says it looks as if it is trying to get back to somewhere. You think of the spiral at the end of it, tight as a clock spring, and how the rosettes along its body are just what a patient carver does when he has more time than paint.
You climb down. Fen has the kettle on the stove and the first drizzle is beading on the tiller plate. "Well," he says, "it's lit." You sit on the cabin step and let him pour, and the lamplight shakes on the water all the way to the bend, carrying its small gold tail out into the current.
