Owl and dreamcatcher on a leg
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A cartoonish owl with large round eyes sits on top of a circular dreamcatcher with a looping web pattern and small beads. Three feathers hang from the bottom of the hoop, with one larger central feather. The tattoo uses clean outlines and soft grey shading in black ink only, set against a light skin tone.

Mrs Abernethy's shop sat between a bakery and a shut-down cobbler's on Tanner Row, and the owl arrived the week the wind changed. Nobody saw him come. He was simply perched on the hoop of the dreamcatcher she had strung in the window, round-eyed and puffed up like a loaf, looking at the street as if it had asked him a question he intended to answer later.

She did not shoo him. She had kept a shop long enough to know that a creature who chooses your window has reasons, even if it keeps them to itself. Instead she fetched a saucer of milk and her reading spectacles and sat down to watch him watch the traffic. Over the next few nights he tallied every lorry, every stumbling drunk, every fox that slunk past the bins, and each morning he left a feather on the counter, one long grey feather and two smaller ones, as neatly as a receipt.
On the ninth night the shop bell rang after closing. A boy stood in the doorway in a coat too big for him, soaked through, holding a torn kite. He had been looking for somewhere to dry out, he said, and the light in the window had seemed to be on for him. The owl ruffled his feathers and blinked his enormous eyes, and the boy blinked back, and for a while neither of them spoke.
Mrs Abernethy mended the kite that night with thread from her sewing basket and the feathers from the counter. In the morning the boy was gone and the dreamcatcher hung a little lower, its web pulled tight, with a fresh grey feather knotted to its base. The owl had flown off, but the window stayed lit every night after, just in case.
