Pocket watch with scrollwork on the back of a hand

Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey pocket watch sits at the centre of the image, with Roman numerals around its dial and a visible mechanism inside the face. Ornate scrolling leaves and shadowed foliage frame the watch and fill the space around it. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft grey gradients giving the metal case and dial depth, and the composition centres the watch on the back of a clenched hand.

The bell at Corrow Hall has rung eleven times, and you still have the watch in your fist, its case warm from your palm, the Roman numerals turning under your thumb like teeth on a gear. Nobody in the Vale of Istry pays a clockmaker to stop. Yet here you are in the back room of the wardens' house, prising open the silver lid with a hairpin.

Inside, the mechanism is not what the guild taught you. The balance wheel has been cut away, and in its place sits a folded square of vellum sealed with wax the colour of old brick. Lord Warden Ostrin swore to the king that this watch kept true time. He lied about the hour, and he lied about the vellum, and he gave the watch to you because you were the only maker in Istry who would open it rather than sell it.

You read the letter twice. It names the three river towns that will drown if the sluice gates at Harrow are not lifted by dawn, and it is signed in a hand you know from the tithe ledgers, the hand of the widow who taught you to file a tooth. You set the hands to the true hour, close the case with a click like a held breath, and walk out past the sleeping guards toward the water.

By the time the sun cracks the eastern hills the gates are open, and the watch ticks in your pocket, wrong by a minute, which is the only mistake you intend to keep.
