Pocket watch and roses on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of an open pocket watch with Roman numerals and hands, set among three shaded roses on the forearm. The shading moves from soft grey halftones to darker contrast, giving the watch face, roses and petals a rounded, three-dimensional look. The composition wraps the watch across the centre of the arm, with roses above and below it, and the photo is taken straight on against an indoor background.

The last night at Caddick's Travelling Pavilion, Mr Lusk would not raise his arm to start the band until his pocket watch agreed with the clock above the ticket box, and the two had disagreed since Tuesday. I stood by the flap with his coat over my arm, the satin lining gone the colour of weak tea, and counted the empty seats. Forty-one. Nobody had brought roses to the ring this year, so I had bought three from the market in Leeds and pinned them to the centre pole where the spotlight would find them.

He took the watch from me without looking up. The lid was open the way he always kept it, so the Roman numerals faced the lamps like a row of soldiers who had lost their nerve. 'They tell you the time for nothing, Lottie,' he said, 'and still people pay for the wrong one.' He turned the crown twice, slowly, and the hands crept forward to match the ticket clock. Then he closed the lid with his thumb and that was the end of the argument.
Afterwards, when the brass had been packed into its crates and the lamps dimmed, he sat on an upturned crate in the sawdust and held the watch out to me. 'Keep it wound,' he said. 'Somebody ought to be on time for something.' The roses were already shedding, one petal at a time, and their grey shadows had gone soft in the low light, so they looked carved rather than grown.
I walked out under the canvas with the watch ticking against my hip. Behind me the nearest rose let go of its last petal, and the small sound it made landing in the sawdust was the loudest thing in the whole empty tent.
