Pocket watch on the upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic pocket watch with a ring-and-crown top and Roman numeral dial sits on the outer upper arm, with hands set near the upper right. Fine shading gives the case depth and metallic volume, and the cracked glass and exposed gear wheels on the right side add detail. The image is in black and grey, shot outdoors against a street with parked cars in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Harbour master Tobias Crane wound the brass pocket watch every Sunday after church, because his father had, and because the boats kept their own hours and someone had to keep the town's. The watch had come off a wreck at the mouth of the bay, the glass already split across the twelve in a crooked line, the gears on the right side bared where the case had cracked open against a rock.

Nobody in Skerrick Cove would sell him a new glass. Mr Pell at the chandlery said a cracked face only made a clock look older than it was, and that a watch with its hands at ten past four was a watch that remembered something. Tobias thought that was nonsense until the spring the fog came in for nine days and the lighthouse bell failed, and he sat on the quay with the watch open on his knee, counting the ticks he could still hear through the broken face.

On the tenth morning the fog lifted and he saw the fishing fleet coming in early, four boats running low under the headland, exactly where the hands had been pointing all along. He had not set them there. He had only never moved them.

He wound the crown until his thumb ached, then carried the watch down to the breakwater and laid it face up on the warm stone, so the gears could catch the light. Then he walked back to the harbour office to ring the bell by hand.
