Cracked pocket watch on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A pocket watch with an ornate bow and Roman numerals sits on the inner arm, with its hour and minute hands set on the dial. Part of the glass face appears cracked, and the exposed gears on the right are shaded with fine detail and soft grey gradients. The piece is rendered entirely in black and grey ink against the skin, with a grey top and a street scene blurred in the background.

The cage bell has rung twice before you remember the watch. It is in your waistcoat where it always is, though the glass split the week the lamp-room shelf gave way, and a thin line now runs from the XII down past the IV like a crack in river ice. Your father wound this watch every night for thirty years. The bow is worn smooth from his thumb. You open the case under the bare bulb in the lamp room and find the hands still moving.

The men at Carnhallow call you the timekeeper now, because you are the one who chalks the names on the board at the head of the shaft. Lowry says a watch is wasted brass on a man who can read the sun. You let him talk. You know what the wheels look like behind the dial when the light catches them, each tooth waiting its turn against the next. Your father used to say a pit is only a clock that nobody has learned to read.

On the Thursday the board is full, and you are still standing at the shaft mouth when the lamps start coming up the drift. You count them the way he taught you, touching each name with your finger. Eleven. Twelve. Tom Ashby is the last, grinning through the coal dust, owing you a shilling he has never paid. You do not rub his name off. You hold the watch flat in your palm so the broken glass catches the lamp.

The hands say twenty past six. For once in your life, you are not late.
