Pocket watch, rose and crown on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a pocket watch with Roman numerals and fine mechanical detail at the centre, with a rose above, a crown on top of the watch, and rolled banknotes below. A cursive script sits near the wrist. The work is shaded in black and grey with smooth gradients and sharp highlights, and the image shows the same forearm from three angles.

The watchmaker had counted the coins three times, and each time the purse came up short. The wedding was set for the Sunday after the thaw, and Tobias Rook had promised his daughter Margit a silver pocket watch with a crown on its lid, the kind the old lord's steward carried. He had nothing to pay with but the brass watch he already owned, its Roman numerals worn pale by his father's thumb.

On the Friday a stranger came into the shop with a roll of banknotes tied in red thread. He wanted the watch wound and kept running until the wedding, and he would pay in full. Tobias asked what it was for. The stranger set a rose on the counter, pressed flat and gone brown at the edges, and said the bride would know it when she saw it.
Margit came on the Saturday and did not ask about the money. She looked at the rose, then at the watch ticking under its glass, and took the crown from the back of the drawer where her mother had kept it. She fitted it to the lid herself, and the hands moved on past noon without a sound.
On the Sunday the stranger came to the church door and found the watch stopped at a quarter to twelve, the rose pinned to the bride's sleeve. He took back his banknotes, folded them into a little tower on the step, and walked away. Margit wound the watch every morning for fifty years, and when people asked why it had stopped that day, she said it had heard the bells and decided to wait for her.
