Pocket watch with spiral dial on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A pocket watch with a crown-topped bow sits at the centre, its face showing a spiralling dial with numerals that fade towards the middle. Leaves and a trailing chain of beads wrap around the watch and curl outwards. The piece uses soft grey shading and fine linework on pale skin against a dark background.

Mrs Okafor came in on the Tuesday with the watch wrapped in a handkerchief, and set it on my bench the way people set down something that might bite. The crown was worn smooth. She said her husband had wound it every night for forty-one years and then stopped the week he died. I told her I could clean it. I didn't tell her the spiral was wrong, because it wasn't wrong, only unfamiliar.

I opened the case with the tiny screwdriver and found the movement dry as a church bell rope. Under the balance wheel, someone had scratched a row of letters, then crossed them out. Old oil had gathered along the bridge in beads, like pearls on a broken string. I worked until the shop lights hummed and the gulls outside gave up. When I finally set the hands and let the mainspring go, the seconds did not march round the dial. They travelled inward, one numeral at a time, the way a thread unspools into a knot.
I rang her at seven. She came before the kettle boiled, still in her coat, and stood with her hand flat on the glass. The twelve was closest to the centre now, and the watch ticked as if it had all the time it needed. She asked me what time it was. I looked at the small brass heart of the dial and said it was nearly the hour he used to wind it. She nodded, closed her fingers over the watch, and paid me in coins, counting each one out loud.
