Polynesian-style sleeve on forearm and upper arm
Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A full arm sleeve of dense black tribal patterning covers the upper arm and forearm, built from bold bands, curved wave forms, triangles and fine geometric fills. The linework is solid and even, with heavy black areas balanced by open skin between the motifs. The image is entirely black and grey, shot against a blurred outdoor background with a dark navy top and a metal wristwatch.

The reef at Tavaroa broke the water into bands, and Ioane had never learned to read them. His uncle could stand on the beach at dusk and say which swell would lift a canoe and which would fold it. Ioane saw only grey lines that all looked the same.

One evening his grandmother sent for him. She sat on the mat with her sleeve of old ink pushed to the elbow and drew a finger along the lines. 'Those wide bands are the long swells,' she said. 'These sharp points are where the reef hides. The curl is the wind turning. Count them the way you would count children on a path.' He asked why she had marked her arm with the sea. She said the sea was not something she wanted to forget.
Ioane went out before light with the bands counted in his head. The swells came in the order she had given: three long, a curl, two short. At each sharp point he turned the paddle hard, and the canoe slid over the rock where the water went white and quiet. On the far side the lagoon lay flat as a blade.
When he came home his grandmother was asleep with her arm across her face. He sat beside her and traced the bands on her skin, the way she had traced them on the air, and found they matched the path he had just taken. She did not wake. He understood then that she had never been teaching him the sea, only teaching him to carry the way home on the body where it could not be lost.
