Poodle silhouette on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black silhouette of a poodle sits on the upper back, to the right of a patterned shoulder strap. The shape has a crisp outline with simple fills and no interior shading or fine detail. The ink is a single dark tone against warm skin, and the composition places the motif in the open space near the shoulder blade.

The poodle came up the lane the week the frost broke, trotting ahead of a cart that nobody had ordered and nobody could explain. Mrs Abernethy at the lych gate said it had no owner, no collar, and a clip so neat it must have been done by someone with patience. Her grandson, who kept the allotments below the church, said the dog had walked straight past the wall of hollyhocks and sat down by the water butt, as if it had been posted there.

Nobody wanted it, so it stayed. It ate the windfalls under the old pear tree and never once went near the compost heap, which Mrs Abernethy took as good manners. When the children tried to stroke it, it allowed one touch on the crown of the head and then stepped neatly away, the way a clerk closes a ledger.
In October a travelling man came through selling clockwork birds from a tin trunk. He saw the dog by the gate, stopped, and laughed until he had to sit on the trunk. He said his mother had kept one just like it, cut from a single cloth of shadow and stitched to the shoulder of anyone who stayed too long in a place they meant to leave. He tipped his cap and walked on without his birds.
The poodle followed him as far as the crossroads and then turned back, shaking its shaggy head. Mrs Abernethy never saw it leave. She only noticed, the next spring, that the gate had been painted, the hollyhocks had gone to seed, and the dark mark on her own shoulder had begun to look a good deal like a dog waiting patiently for a walk.
