Small owl tattoo behind the ear
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small owl outline in black ink sits on the skin behind the ear, with its ear tufts and round eyes drawn in simple single lines. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the tattoo is set against a plain skin tone. The shot is a close side view with the hair pulled back, and the ear and neck fill most of the frame.

Something was perched on the lamp post by the bin store. She had noticed it three nights running, a small grey shape with its head turned square to the building, as though it were doing the rounds too. Nobody else on the night shift had seen it. Dev said it was a plastic bag caught on the bracket.

She told him yes, because it was true, and because the answer seemed to settle something in him. This time she pulled the curtain back a few inches so he could see the post.
He squinted for a long while. Then he said his late wife used to swear that owls were just somebody keeping watch so the rest of us could sleep, and that he had never once believed her. Mara laughed, then stopped, because the shape on the post had lifted off and was gone over the allotments without a sound. Dunmore closed his eyes. By the time the trolley came round for the six o'clock obs, he was snoring, and the lamp post stood empty against the first grey light.
