You stop steering somewhere past the last fuel stop, when the road has been straight for so long that the heat starts to look like water. The old pickup drifts left and you correct it without thinking, the way you correct everything now. On the dashboard sits the little elephant your father carved from ironwood the winter before he sold the garage, its trunk curled up as if it means to trumpet at the windscreen. Its sides are scored with the same notched pattern he cut into everything, a row of small chevrons like stitching on a saddle.

Two hundred kilometres back, the woman at the diner asked whether you were going to scatter him or keep him. You said neither, you were going to drive, and she gave you a look that suggested she had heard that before. Nobody warns you that a dead man's tools can make a whole town go quiet around you. Out here the only things that move are dust devils and a hawk turning over the scrub. Once a lorry comes at you from the far horizon, wobbling in the shimmer, and then it is gone, leaving a long sigh of grit across the tarmac.

At the lookout where the road bends, you pull over and climb onto the bonnet. The low sun comes through the windscreen and throws the elephant's shadow across your knees, pale cut-outs of its body sliding as the engine ticks and cools. You sit there until the light goes orange, holding the carved trunk in your palm, the one part of him you can still hold steady. Then you start the engine and drive on, and the raised trunk no longer looks like a warning.
