Black fine line script reading Only if I want to with a small paper aeroplane, on the outer forearm against a wooden shingle wall.

Script quote and paper aeroplane on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm is held out horizontally, showing a thin black script that reads Only if I want to, followed by a small outlined paper aeroplane at the end of the line. The linework is fine and even, and the ink is solid black with no colour. The arm fills the centre of the frame against a blurred background of weathered wooden shingles, with a grey sleeve pushed up near the elbow.

Mrs Hollis's boy came up the lane on Tuesday with the invitation folded into a point, the way every child in Thrope has been taught to fold them. Harvest supper, Saturday, bring the good plates. I unfolded it on the post office counter and read it twice, once for the words and once for the handwriting, which leaned forward as if it were already late for something.

The village stops where the beeches start. Past the stile there is nothing but wet leaves and a path that loops back on itself, and everyone knows the Hollis girls used to throw their folded notes over that rail for the wood to carry off. I have never believed the wood reads them. I have always believed the wind does, and the wind is a poor secretary.

So I took a pencil and wrote on the back of her note, in my own square capitals: ONLY IF I WANT TO. Then I folded it the way my father taught me, nose tucked, wings squared, and sent it sailing over the stile with my whole arm, the way you'd send a bad cricket ball.

It came back at dusk, skidding across the step and stopping against my boot. Beneath my line, in a hand I did not know, someone had written: Then I will bring the plates to you. I walked out to the stile in my coat. Nobody was there, only the beeches standing very still, as if they had been waiting to be asked.
