Lace and rose tattoo on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a rose set within a lace-style border covers part of the outer thigh. The linework is fine and the roses are shaded with soft grey tones, with the lace edge drawn in dense dark ink. A hand holds the leg in the foreground, and a bare foot is visible at the bottom of the frame.

Sister Agnes had the bobbins clicking by the time the bell for Lauds rang, and I was still hunting for my second shoe under the refectory bench. She never let me forget it. Her hands moved over the pillow without looking, pins stuck in the cork like a row of small white teeth, and the pattern grew from the thread the way frost grows on a pane.

Our house at Calder Fell had no money left after the flood took the mill, so we sold lace to the town by the bolt and kept the best for ourselves. The abbess wanted roses. Every winter she asked for a border of thorns and a bloom at the centre, and every winter Agnes made the thorns too sharp and the rose too heavy, so that it looked less like a garden and more like something pressed between the pages of a book and forgotten.
The last piece she made was for the chapel altar cloth, and it was the only one she never sold. She worked it through the whole of Advent by the light of one tallow candle, and on the feast of the Annunciation she cut it free and folded it in tissue paper. Two days later the abbess found that the rose had been stitched in grey silk instead of white, shaded darker at the petals as though someone had breathed on it. Agnes only smiled and said the rose had decided its own colour.
