Potted plant tattoo on the lower back

Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo

A large houseplant in a grey pot with a yellow-orange rim sits centred on the lower back. The leaves have bold black outlines and are filled with green patterned zigzag shapes, with a soft blue blurred dot above the plant. The flat colour and graphic linework are set against smooth skin, with a partial dark tattoo visible at the right edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Dacre gave you the rubber plant the week the bus stopped running to Cowley Bridge, saying nobody in the house had the patience for it and it was yours now if you could keep it alive through a Lincolnshire winter. It came in a tin bath of a pot, its leaves broad as dinner plates and marked in pale green zigzags like the stitching on a hot-water bottle cover. The first month it dropped three leaves on the lino, and you swept them up without telling anyone.

By March you had a grey enamel pot from the ironmonger's sale, chipped at the rim where somebody had set it down too hard, and you had learned the plant's habits the way you learned the shift rota at the laundry. Turn it a quarter each Sunday or it leans toward the window and forgets its own shape. Wipe the dust off with a damp cloth. Keep the tenants' cat off the windowsill. The blue glass shade on the landing light threw a faint colour across the leaves after dark, and you started calling that the moon, though nobody asked you to.

When Mr Dacre came back from Leeds in June for the rest of his things, he stopped in the parlour doorway and looked at the plant for a long time. You waited for him to say it was his, the way he'd said everything else in the house was his. Instead he touched one leaf with a finger, said it had come on nicely, and went upstairs without his suitcase. That evening you turned the pot a quarter, the way you always did, and it still faced the window.
