Blue hibiscus and butterfly on a shoulder

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

A large colour tattoo of a blue hibiscus flower with pink stamens sits on the upper back and shoulder blade, flanked by green leaves with water droplets. A translucent blue and purple butterfly and a faceted diamond sit in the lower right of the design against a soft blue wash. The shading is smooth and realistic, with strong highlights on the petals and leaves, and a grey ankh tattoo is visible higher up on the upper arm.

Nell had stopped counting kilometres somewhere past the dry salt pan and started counting the litres left in the jerrycans strapped behind the seat. Four. The radiator ticked as it cooled, and the heat came up off the bitumen in sheets that made the horizon swim like something seen through a glass of water.

Her brother had sent her a photograph of a hibiscus once, from a garden outside Darwin, the petals so blue they looked poured rather than grown. Nell had kept it tucked in the sun visor for three years. Now she pulled it free and held it against the wheel, studying the droplets on the green leaves, each one a bright point where the light caught, as though the plant had been out in rain that morning and still remembered it.

The fuel stop at Kulgera was one pump, a tin roof and a woman called Marisol Peck, who sat on an upturned crate with a tray of cracked eggs and a radio playing the cricket. She looked at the jerrycans, then at Nell's face, and said nothing about either. She filled two bottles from a cool room behind the counter and pressed them into Nell's hands without asking for money.

Nell drove on with the windows down and the bottles wedged upright beside her. Far off, a blue butterfly lifted off a fence post, wings catching the sun like sheets of glass, and fell in behind the car for a mile before the road bent and it was gone.
