Profile silhouette with keyhole on abdomen

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black silhouette of a head in profile sits on the lower abdomen, with a keyhole-shaped opening containing a small house or doorway shape. The shading is smooth and dense, with a clean outline and soft grey transitions around the edges. The tattoo is photographed close up on bare skin, with a navel piercing and blue fabric visible at the frame edges.

You are the only lockmaker left in Londinium who will still cut a key for a dead man's chest, so when the magistrate's clerk comes to the forge at dusk asking for a bronze key with a bit shaped like a little roof, you do not argue. He says it is for a box. His hands keep drifting to the wax seal on his satchel. You file the wards while the furnace ticks down, and you do not ask whose house it is.

He tells you a story instead, the way men do when they are paying in silver. In Verulamium, he says, a woman had her husband's profile cut into a bronze plate above her door, a face turned half toward the street as if listening for a footstep. When he sailed for the grain ships she had a second key made to match the first, and hung the pair on either side of the lintel. Nobody could enter without passing between his face and the empty keyhole, and nobody ever asked her why she kept the door so carefully locked.

You finish the key and hold it to the lamp. The bow is clean, the gable neat, the hole for the light narrow as a thread. The clerk pays twice your price and leaves before you have wiped the file.

In spring a courier brings a plain plate to the forge, dented at one corner, with a man's brow and nose cut out in black and a small door stamped in the hollow where his eye should be. There is no note. You turn it over and find a cut mark, a roof and a single line, and you understand that the clerk was never buying a key at all.
