Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman's upper back is shown from behind, with long blonde hair falling over her shoulders. The centre of the frame holds a black outlined keyhole tattoo containing a rose and a circle with a diagonal line through its lower half. The linework is clean and solid, with black ink only and plain skin around the design.

Her father had kept the light for thirty-one years and had a habit of locking away things he meant to forget: the storm shutters, the paraffin store, the cabinet with the logbooks from before the war. She tried each door in turn while the wind drove rain sideways across the glass. Nothing took it. The gulls had gone quiet on the rocks below, which was how she knew the tide was turning.

The key slid in as though it had been cut from the same bar of brass.
Inside was a ladder, a tin box, and a folded chart of the coast with a rose pencilled at the place where the Mary Ellen had gone down. Ada put the key back in the tin and left the hatch open behind her. The beam swung over her head, and for the first time in years she did not count the flashes.
