Two cats with heart tails on chest
Chest · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows a solid black silhouette of two cats seen from behind, one slightly larger than the other, sitting side by side on a woman's upper chest. Their tails curl down and join to form an open heart outline between them. The ink is uniform black with crisp edges and no shading, set against pale skin, a grey top and dark hair at the edges of the frame.

The two cats are already on the back step when you unlock the flour store at ten to four, sitting shoulder to shoulder like customers who have paid for the view. The bigger one is Morris, grey-black and wide as a loaf tin. The smaller is Tansy, who came in through the coal hatch in February and has never once been asked to leave.

Nobody feeds them officially. Dilys, who owns the place and sleeps until six, says a bakery with cats in it gets its rats done for free, and she does not want to hear about hygiene. So you keep a saucer of milk by the proving cabinet and tell yourself it is only for Morris, because Tansy will eat anything you leave, including, once, a cold croissant from the sample tray.
The morning Dilys's nephew came to measure up for the new ovens, the cats were nowhere. You searched the yard with a torch, calling their names like a fool. At half four they came back over the wall, Morris first, and Tansy behind him with her tail hooked through his, so the two of them made a loop you could have drawn with a compass. They sat down on the step and waited, exactly as if the door had been the thing that went missing.
You crack the first eggs with the window still black and the cats watching the dough rise under its cloth. Nobody has ever asked you where you were going before dawn. Morris yawns. Tansy washes one paw and then the other. The loaves go into the oven at six and the smell rolls out into the street, and for once you do not mind being the last to know who belongs where.
