Matching script quote tattoos on two feet

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet rest against each other on blue patterned bedding, with a quote in black cursive script on each. The left foot reads "Maybe in distance, but never in heart" and the right foot reads "Together forever" above a second line that is partly hidden, with fine, even linework and solid black ink. The image is in colour, though the tattoos themselves are black, and the framing is close and casual with the toenails painted coral.

Nell had the last of the lamp oil and a wire that sagged a foot in the middle, and she was not going to ask the new owner for a second rigger. The Halloran Brothers Travelling Show had folded its big top in Swindon in April, and now it was four wagons and a patched canvas on a field outside Frome, where the cows watched with more interest than the audience ever had.

Her partner, Teodor, had gone north in March with the horses, to a seaside pier that paid wages instead of hope. He wrote on the backs of old handbills. Maybe in distance, he had scrawled once, beneath a drawing of a gull, and she had laughed until she cried at the cheek of it, then pinned the scrap above the cot.

Tonight she stood on the wire with her toes curled over the steel, the field empty except for the moths circling the lantern. Her feet knew the rope better than her head did. She thought of the ink Teodor had paid a man in Bristol to put along his own ankle, two lines of script that made him look like a ledger of promises. Together forever, his said, and she had laughed at that too, since forever had always been their joke about a ring they could not afford.

She reached the far pole, lifted her arms, and bowed to nobody. Then the lantern guttered and a cart rattled up the lane. It was the pier post, two days early, with a letter in a hand she knew. Teodor had written one line: Come north, the sea wants a wire walker. Nell folded it into her sleeve and walked back across the rope without once looking down.
