Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A black and grey design of the scripture quote She is clothed in strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future, reference Proverbs 31:25, set in mixed script and capital lettering. Branches of blossom with open flowers and buds curl down the left and right sides, and two butterflies sit at the top left and bottom right. The shading is soft and grey-toned on the petals and wings, with bold black lettering and clean outlines across a plain light background.

The blossom reached the lock before Mae did, drifting down the cut in pale drifts that caught on the Lark's bow and clung there like wet confetti. She had the tiller in one hand and a mug of stewed tea in the other, and she watched the petals gather against the gates with the patience of someone who had already decided the morning would be difficult.

Walt Benning was waiting on the lock beam with his cap pushed back. 'Your paddles are stiff again,' he said. 'Your old man would have had them greased by now.' 'My old man would have had the whole barge in the willows by now,' Mae said, and Walt snorted, which she took as a truce. Above the lock, the old orchard leaned over the towpath, its branches heavy with open flowers and a few fat buds still tight as knuckles. Two brimstones, gone pale from winter, danced over the hedge as if they had been hired for the occasion.
She tied off at the top of the lock and walked up the path to Ida Shorrock's gate. Ida was eighty-one and had sold windfalls to every boat that passed since the war. She pressed a jar of last year's damson into Mae's hands and asked whether the Lark was really going to the auction in June. Mae said yes. Ida nodded at the orchard. 'Trees don't ask whether you've got a buyer,' she said. 'They just come out in blossom anyway.'
Back on the Lark, Mae cast off and let the current take her towards Banbury. A brimstone settled on the tiller, folding and unfolding its wings, and she did not shoo it away. She laughed out loud at nothing in particular, and the sound carried over the water to Walt, who looked up from his gate and shook his head as though she had finally lost her mind.
