Marjorie had been asked to hang the bunting over Hadley Street for the summer fête, which was how she came to be eleven feet above the pavement at seven in the morning, with a mouthful of wire and a head full of other people's troubles. Every committee member brought her a problem, because she was the only one tall enough to hear them over the hedges.

Mr Pell wanted the library clock mended before the council inspector arrived. The vicar's wife had lost her reading glasses somewhere in the crown of the chestnut tree. A lad from the chip shop asked whether she missed the savannah, and she said yes, because it was easier than explaining that she had only ever seen one in a faded calendar pinned behind the till.

By noon the bunting was up, crooked on one side, and the clock had stopped again. She sat on the library steps with her neck folded down over her knees like a dropped scarf, and the pigeons came to pick at somebody's abandoned scone. Mr Pell came out with a flask of tea and asked if she was all right.

"Ask me again when the lights are off," she said. He laughed, sat down beside her on the cold stone, and for a long while nobody needed anything from her at all, which turned out to be the only thing that let her head rise again.
