Script lettering: The struggle is part of the story

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a hand-drawn script phrase in black ink that reads The struggle is part of the story, with looping capitals and a connected, flowing baseline. The linework is even and solid with no shading, and the words are set across three lines with the middle line set smaller. The design sits on a plain pale pink background with no body part or other objects visible.

Your mother will tell you I have gone soft in the head since the flood took the lower archive, and she may be right, but hear me out before you burn this. The Lord Chancellor of Ambry has ordered every chronicle rewritten so the drought years read as triumphs. I refused, so they took my pen-box and gave me this cellar and a lamp that smokes.

Down here I have had leisure to think about ink. The old scribes of Caldreth made their letters with a broad nib and a hand that never lifted, so each stroke ran into the next, looping and rising like a river finding its way round stones. Our first master used to rap the desk whenever a line came out too neat. A clean page, he said, is a lie told by someone who was not present. Every hard upstroke was left where the hand had struggled, and every blot was allowed to dry.

So when the Chancellor's clerks come for the last ledger, I want you to give them the other one, the book with the water stain across its middle, where the grain failed and the figures sprawl. Copy it out fair in the old hand and let the blots stand. I have written a line at the foot of the spoiled page for you to keep your wrist steady: 'The struggle is part of the story.' It is the only sentence in the kingdom they cannot tax.

Go before the bells ring for the third hour. Tell Oren the cellar door sticks and needs a shoulder to it. Your teacher, Imre.
