She believed she could so she did lettering
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows the phrase She believed she could so she did in flowing black script, with the word so set smaller between the lines. Small mandala-style ornaments and star accents sit in the corners and beside the letters. The linework is solid black on plain white with no shading, so it reads as a clean stencil-ready design.

The snow had shut the Drover's Rest for three days when Nell Carrick unrolled her brushes across the taproom table and found the board still blank. Mr Ashdown wanted the phrase painted across the lintel of the new bar, and he wanted it finished before the first coach came through after Easter. Nell had lettered gravestones, shopfronts and one bakery van, but never a sentence that seemed to be about her.

She sketched it in chalk first, the long loops of the capitals leaning like someone walking into a wind. Then she ran out of width. "She believed she could" filled the board edge to edge, and the last word had nowhere to go. Ashdown's daughter Pip, home from school with a cold, watched from the settle over a mug of cocoa. "Make it smaller," Pip said. "Squeeze it in the middle."
Nell did. She set the small "so" between the two lines in a neater hand, then tucked a star beside the d of "did", a single point of gold leaf she had brought for her own use. When she stepped back, the big words carried the small one like a hinge, and the whole line held.
The thaw came on the Saturday. Ashdown hung the board, and the first drinkers to read it were lorry drivers stamping slush off their boots. They read it aloud to each other in the doorway and argued about the "so". Nell stayed out of the argument. She was packing her brushes away when she noticed the gold leaf still clinging to her thumb.
