Flower bouquet tattoo on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bouquet of small open flowers and long, pointed leaves is tied at the base with a looped stem. The linework is fine and dark, with soft grey shading on the petals and leaves that gives them dimension. The bouquet sits centred on the forearm against a plain, dimly lit background, and the image is shown in a warm, sepia-toned monochrome.

Aunt Ruth tied every bunch with the same loop of garden twine, and she would not let me use wire. 'Wire holds too hard,' she said, 'and a flower should be able to slip out of a hand when it's finished.' I was nine and assumed she meant the flowers were tired. It took me until the spring I turned forty to understand she had been talking about the twine, and about herself.

This morning the walled garden was grey with dew, and the pansies had come up again in the bed by the gate, dark-faced the way they always are after a hard frost. I cut a handful, two long leaves shaped like spear tips from the old rhubarb row, and a few buds still shut tight. Ruth would have said buds are the honest part of any bunch. They promise something and don't yet claim anything.
The shed still smelled of linseed and creosote. Her labels hung from a nail in the rafters, each one in square capitals: MARCH, FOR THE CHURCH, FOR NOBODY. I found the last one under a seed tray. It said FOR THE LANE, and beneath it, in pencil gone faint, she had written out the house numbers on our road, one to twenty-two.
I walked the list with the bunch in my hand. At each gate I hung a single loose loop of twine over the post and left the flowers in it, so anyone could take them and nobody had to be thanked. At number nine the blinds were still down. I left the last bunch on the step with its stems turned toward the door, and walked home with my hands smelling green and empty.
