Pufferfish on a lower leg

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A small pufferfish with an inflated, rounded body and a single visible eye is tattooed on the lower leg. The linework is fine and the body is built up with stippled dots and light shading. The image is in black and grey, with a plain pale skin background and a softly blurred setting behind the leg.

It hung in the green water with one bright eye fixed on the door, puffing itself round as a pudding whenever the band struck up something it disapproved of.

The band that autumn was a brass quartet from Hull who played nothing but foxtrots. I had come to fetch my mother's coat and stayed to watch the floor, where Eddie Marl from the ice cream kiosk kept treading on the toes of the girl from the chemist. Every time he apologised, the fish swelled a little more, and by the last waltz it was as round as a fist and bumping against the glass as if it wanted out.

Eddie asked me to dance at ten to eleven. I said no, then said yes, because the fish had gone so round and so stern that I felt I had to answer for the whole room. We turned beneath the crescent moon lamp that hung over the floor, and I stopped counting steps.

When the lights came up, Mrs Ostler found the tank gone quiet, the fish flat and calm again and sinking slowly to the gravel. She tapped the glass and said, well, that's that settled, and I did not ask her what she meant.
