Neo-traditional tattoo of a pug wearing pink sunglasses with blue lenses, on the outside of a lower leg.

Pug in pink sunglasses on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A pug wearing pink-framed sunglasses with blue-tinted lenses fills the frame, with its face shaded in grey and black and its ears and jowls in tan. Bold black outlines define the features, and a few hexagon outlines sit to the left of the dog. The photograph is taken straight on, showing the tattoo on a lower leg against a grey pavement.

Our Dougal had worn the pink glasses since the week the lamp room at Hollin Bank flooded, and nobody in the village had the nerve to ask him to take them off. On bingo nights at the welfare hall Dougal sat under the stage with his chin on the floor, because the parquet was laid in hexagons, six sides to every tile, and he said it was the only sensible shape a floor could be. He liked the honeycomb. He liked the way the light came off the varnish. Mostly he liked Mrs Oddie, who called the numbers in a voice like a shovel on gravel and never once looked down at him.

The night the strike fund was nine pounds short, Frank put his last card on the table and stood up for the full house. Mrs Oddie reached for the next ball, paused, and said, "Who's the gentleman under the stage?" Dougal came out slowly, pink lenses catching the bulbs, and sat square in front of her as if he'd been called up to the front himself.

"Seventeen," she said, and Frank had his line. The fund got its nine pounds. Dougal trotted back under the stage with the glasses straight on his nose, very pleased with himself, and did not look at anyone for the rest of the evening.
