Game Boy with top hat on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A handheld games console with a monocle and moustache on its screen wears a top hat, framed by a laurel wreath with a joystick at the base. The bold outlines and solid fills are combined with soft watercolour splashes in teal, green, red and orange. The tattoo sits centrally on the calf and the composition is symmetrical.

Dear Mr Pemberton in 4C,

The lift has been broken since Easter and I have stopped shouting at it, so I am shouting at you instead. Last Thursday, gone half eleven, your little handheld chirped through the wall with that bright start-up tune, then a clipped voice from a tin castle, then a string of words I will not repeat in a letter to a neighbour.

I am not cross. I knew a man once who kept one of those in his coat for thirty years, a grey one with stiff buttons, and he played it on the 37 bus every morning until his eyes gave out. He swore the little gent on the screen had a moustache like a shoe brush and a monocle he polished on his sleeve. When they cleared his flat I found the thing in a biscuit tin with its joystick wrapped in a hanky, and I could not bring myself to throw either away.

So here is my request. Would you let me sit in on one evening, Thursday if it suits, and watch you beat whatever is in that castle? I will bring a flask and the good custard creams. I only want to see whether the top hat still sits straight on the screen when someone else is holding the buttons.
