Pug portrait tattoo on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic portrait of a pug with a wrinkled face, large dark eyes and front paws resting at the bottom of the design. The wrinkles, fur and nose are rendered with fine shading and strong contrast, and soft grey tones fade into the skin around the head. The tattoo fills most of the frame on the inside of a forearm, with a blurred background of a room behind it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Pindar had never once, in eleven years behind the pawnbroker's counter in Bristol, been asked to lend against a dog, so he took the matter seriously when Alma Sprake came in with her mother's wedding ring in one hand and a black pug tucked under her other arm. The pug was called Bishop. He had a face like a crumpled letter and the sort of dark, reproachful eyes that made a man reconsider his interest rate.

"He's not for sale," Alma said, and set Bishop on the counter, where he folded his front paws together like a clerk waiting for a verdict. "I need eleven shillings for the rent. You can keep the ring, if you'll let him sleep in the back."

Mr Pindar weighed the ring on the brass scales. Then he weighed the dog, or tried to. Bishop let out a long, wet sigh through his nose and leaned his wrinkled head against the pan until the scales tipped in his favour.

Alma redeemed the ring in March, paying in coppers and a promise. Bishop did not leave. By the following winter he had a basket by the stove, a tin of liver cake from the baker across the road, and a standing place on the ledger, where he slept each afternoon with his chin on the open page. Mr Pindar, who had written every pledge in that book in neat copperplate, finally gave up and added one last line in the margin: Item: one pug. Pledged, never redeemed, not wanted back.
