Pug portrait with red roses on a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A shaded black and grey pug head sits inside a twisted rope-style oval frame, with a soft grey backdrop behind the dog. Two bold red roses with green leaves rest along the bottom of the frame, outlined in dark linework. The colour is limited to the red roses and green foliage, while the dog and frame are rendered in greys and black against pale skin.

The frame had been Marjorie's idea, not Dennis's, and he still said so whenever the sign-writer's bill came up. Twisted gold rope, she'd insisted, like the one round the mantel at Hatfield Road, because a dog that looked that worried ought to be kept in something sturdy. The pug in question sat on the sideboard in the photograph, pressing his wrinkles into the frame's bottom edge as if he expected someone to take him away.

Dennis had carried the photograph to the tattooist on Mill Lane, folded in his coat, and the man there had gone quiet over it, then asked whether the roses should be red or whether Mrs Hale wanted something softer. Dennis said red. Marjorie had always liked a red that couldn't be argued with. He sat for two hours with his trouser leg rolled up while the needle buzzed over his shin, and the man talked about football, which suited him fine.
Afterwards, walking home under the orange streetlamps, Dennis caught his reflection in the bus shelter glass and saw the thing sitting just above the sock line, grey and patient, the roses bright as cherry sweets. The pug on it looked exactly like the one on the sideboard. Dennis decided he would tell Marjorie tomorrow, when he had the words for it, that the dog had finally got himself a frame that fitted.
