Dog portrait with pink orchids on a calf

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

A realistic portrait of a tan dog with a dark muzzle and wide eyes, partly framed by pink orchid blooms, buds and a faded pink flower. The dog is rendered with soft smooth shading and fine highlights, while the orchids have darker outlines and delicate veining. Pink and tan tones dominate against a grey background wash, and the design is centred on the leg.

Bruno had been sick twice by the time the Kestrel Jane cleared the breakwater, and Dan Quick was already rehearsing the apology he would make to the harbourmaster for bringing a dog aboard at all. The animal stood braced on the wet deck with his wide dark eyes fixed on the grey water, his flat muzzle pressed to the rail as if he could will the harbour back into view.

Dan's sister Nell worked the glasshouses up the valley, and every Thursday she sent a crate of pink orchids down to the fish market with the catch returns, because the buyers liked something pretty on the ice. Dan had never understood why she bothered. The blooms opened stiff and waxy and were dead within a week, but Nell kept the spare buds in a jam jar on the wheelhouse sill, so the cabin smelled faintly of something other than diesel and gurnard.

The squall came off the Lizard faster than the forecast had promised. A slack trawl line snapped taut across the deck and took Dan by the ankle, and he was halfway over the side before he knew it. Bruno did not bark. He simply hauled on the back of Dan's oilskin with his stubby jaws until the rope went slack and the two of them tumbled together into the scuppers, soaked and swearing.

When they limped up the slipway at dusk, Nell was waiting under the lamp with a bucket of fresh water. She lifted the dog out of the wheelhouse, pressed her cheek to his flat brow, and said, "Told you he was worth the fuss." Then she slid a single pink bud into the jar by the door, where it would hold its colour for a few days yet, and where the next one was already waiting to open.
