Pumpkin carriage with flowers on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A teal and purple pumpkin carriage with a small heart on its finial sits at the centre, with a yellow and lilac interior visible through the window. Pink and purple flowers, curling vines and small star-shaped sparkles frame it, drawn in thin outlines with soft colour fill. The design sits across the upper thigh against a blurred background of pink flowers.

The raffle had gone badly, and Jo Parrish was still holding the last unsold strip of tickets when Dennis started stacking chairs around her. Behind the serving hatch someone had left the urn on, and the function room smelled of weak tea and the sweet spray of the glitter cannon the year group had hired for the disco. Two hundred people had come to the Oakfield Community Centre to be nineteen again. Most of them had arrived by car, and most had spent the evening telling her she hadn't changed.

Tash Bellamy had been the Fairy Godmother in the Year Nine production of Cinderella, a part she won by owning the only wand in the school. Jo had built the carriage. Mrs Achterberg gave her a papier-mâché pumpkin, a tin of teal emulsion that was the wrong green, and a box of lilac sweet wrappers for the windows, and told her to make it look as though it had sat in a field for a hundred years and was still expecting a ball. Jo painted it four times. It was the only thing on the stage anybody remembered.
Now Tash sold conservatories in Telford and didn't remember the carriage at all. Dennis clicked off the urn. Jo folded the tickets into her coat pocket, where they joined a pinch of silver glitter that had been there since Thursday, and went out to the car park. The sodium lamps made everything the colour of weak lemonade. Someone had left a carved pumpkin on the bonnet of a small hatchback, gone soft in the rain. She stood beside it for a while. Then she tipped the glitter from her pocket onto the wet tarmac, where it caught the light in a thin line, and she drove home the long way, past the old school, with the window down.
