Pumpkin carriage tattoo on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black linework tattoo shows an ornate pumpkin-shaped carriage with a crown-like finial, curled scroll wheels and a fine dotted trail hanging below it. The lines are thin and even, with the fill left open, and the scrolls and drips are repeated in a balanced layout across the side of the torso. There is no colour, only black ink on pale skin, and a hand with pale nail polish sits at the top of the frame.

The last coach left Carrow Keep the winter the east tower fell, and it went nowhere at all. Old Hester Pell, who had kept the stables when there were horses to keep, still walked the drive each midnight with a lantern and a tin of black lacquer, touching up the curls on the wheels where the damp had lifted them. The carriage had been a pumpkin once, or the shape of one, its bulbous body ribbed like a gourd and crowned with a little finial that the rooks liked to perch on.

Nobody in the valley remembered who had ordered it. The ledgers said only that it was paid for in advance, in silver that turned out to be river pebbles, and that the coachman had been told to wait until the bell struck twelve before he drove off. Hester had heard the story from her mother, who had heard it from hers, and each telling made the coachman younger and the lady more hurried.
On the night she turned seventy, the lantern guttered on the stair and she found the dotted trail of dew that had dripped from the scrolls all summer, running down the steps like a line of stitches. She followed it to the carriage door. It was not locked. Inside, the velvet had rotted to lace, and on the seat lay a single glass slipper with its heel cracked.
She sat down in the carriage, folded her hands the way the ledgers said a lady would, and waited for the bell. It struck twelve, then one, then nothing at all. In the morning the dew had dried on the scrolls, and the line of small dark drops ran on past the gate and down the drive towards the sea, as if someone had only just stepped out.
