Pumpkin carriage with flowers and stars on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A teal and pink pumpkin carriage with a heart on its roof and a yellow glow in the window sits at the centre of the design, outlined in thin dark blue linework. Pink flowers, curling vines, scattered pink and blue stars and small dots surround the carriage, with scrolled wheels at the base. The colour is applied in soft, light washes against the fine outlines, and the composition runs diagonally across the skin beside a cluster of pink roses.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marta had been sent up the hill to Hollin Keep with a tin of linseed oil and orders not to touch anything, which was why she was touching everything. The carriage stood under the fallen chapel roof where the rain could not reach it, its pumpkin body split along one seam and its wheels furred with moss. Nobody had driven it since the old Countess died.

The steward had called it a curiosity, a thing that turned back to a gourd at midnight and had been left behind as a family joke. Marta did not believe in midnight. She believed in hinges. She knelt and worked oil into the brass catch of the little window, and inside, where the cushions had rotted to dust, a yellow glass lamp still held a dim glow, as if someone had forgotten to snuff it.

Behind her the ivy rustled and a boy asked whether she was the new mender. She said she was. He told her the roses in the courtyard had been planted for a wedding that never happened, and that they still flowered every June out of spite. Marta laughed and sent him for rags. He came back with two, and a heart-shaped tin tag he had found wedged in the axle, stamped with a name she could not read under the grime.

They cleaned the wheels until the scrolls shone like new wire. When the sun slid behind the walls, the lamp inside the carriage flickered and steadied. Marta did not wait to see whether it would turn to a gourd. She walked home by the road with the boy beside her, the tag held carefully between them, and above the ruin small pink stars came out over the broken walls, one at a time, as though someone were counting the carriages still left.
