Pumpkins, vines and a tabby cat on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Several realistic orange pumpkins with green leaves, tendrils and yellow flowers curl across the skin, with a tabby cat's head peeking in from the right. The design is wrapped around the arm and shown across three side-by-side views. Soft grey shading sits behind the foliage and pumpkins, which are rendered with smooth colour blending and fine highlights.

Mrs Oduya had been counting pumpkins since breakfast, and by ten o'clock she had reached eleven, one more than the seed packet had promised and two more than the allotment could comfortably hold. The vines had crept under the shed door, through the rhubarb and over the water butt, their yellow flowers still open at the tips as if nobody had told them it was September.

Biscuit, the tabby who belonged to nobody on Orchard Row, had made the largest pumpkin his bed. He sat on it with his tail wrapped round his feet, narrowing his eyes at the wood pigeons. "You're not entering him," said Pat from next door, leaning on the fence with a mug of stewed tea. "The show committee has rules about animals." "He's not an animal, he's a fixture," Mrs Oduya said. She heaved the orange monster onto the wheelbarrow, cat and all, and pushed it up the lane toward the village hall.

The judges spent a long time on the marrows and the runner beans. Then they came to the pumpkin with the cat on top, and the chairman, a retired postman with a clipboard, bent to measure its girth with a tape. Biscuit opened one eye and regarded him with the patience of someone who had seen worse judges.

"Largest in the show," the chairman said at last, writing it down. "Though I'm not certain the cat is eligible." Mrs Oduya collected her rosette and wheeled the barrow home, and Biscuit, who had not once been asked, leapt down, trotted ahead of her, and waited at the gate as if he had arranged the whole thing.
