Purple butterfly on the top of a foot
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A purple butterfly with a thin dark outline sits on the top of a bare foot, angled towards the toes. The wings are filled with flat purple and lilac tones, with blue shading along the inner sections and small curled antennae at the head. The background is blurred skin and light fabric, and the composition keeps the tattoo as the clear focus.

The lilac thread had come out of the dye vat at first light, and Ida Penhallow was already behind schedule. Her late husband had always said purple took the longest to set, so she carried the skein down the slipway wrapped in oilcloth to keep the salt off it. Gulls worked over the fish boxes beside the Lady Ellen's stern, and the tide was making fast.

Her grandson Kit, fourteen and sullen, was splicing rope on the quay. He asked what the thread was for. She told him the sail needed a patch over a tear near the leech, and that the old skippers used to sew a shape into the cloth so the boat would fly through weather. He said that was daft. She unrolled a paper pattern for him: two broad wings, blue at the root where the stitching would gather, and a pair of curled feelers at the top like a question mark.
They worked through the afternoon with the sail spread along the harbour wall. The lilac took the light and seemed to hold it. When the wind came in off the bar and lifted the loose cloth, Kit watched the patch shift and said it looked like it was trying to leave.
Ida tied off the last stitch as the bell buoy began to ring. The Lady Ellen went out on the evening ebb with the wings pulled tight over the tear, and when she came back three days later the edges had frayed but the stitching held. Kit still had the paper pattern folded in his jacket, creased right down the middle of one wing.
