Poppy and vine running from calf to ankle
Botanical · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A poppy flower with open petals sits on the calf, with wispy stems, grasses and leaves extending down the shin. The design continues in curling vine and leaf linework over the ankle and onto the top of the foot. The fine, sketchy lines are in a single dark brown ink, set against a pale blue patterned cloth.

The seed-heads are already brown on the terrace wall, and your mother's knife is still in your sash because she has told you twice that the milky sap must be scraped, not wiped, before the sun gets high. Nobody in Kourion trusts a girl with the poppies, she says, not since the last girl who was trusted fell asleep under the olive trees and woke a day late with the goats gone. You don't answer. You are counting the bulbs against the house wall, where the grapevine has crept over the lintel and tangled itself around the lamp hooks.

Your grandmother used to say the vine and the poppy quarrelled at the first harvest, and that Demeter made them sleep in the same field to end the fight. You thought it was a story for children until the summer the vine grew so thick it pulled the shutters off their pins. Now you tie its runners back with flax thread while the poppy heads nod above you, papery and heavy, and the wind carries grass seed up the lane toward the harbour.
A stranger comes up the lane at noon, a sailor with salt in his beard, asking for water and something to cool his brother's fever. You measure the syrup drop by drop against the lamplight and watch him count them with you. He does not thank you. He takes the jar and leaves a bronze coin on the step, face up, with a poppy stamped into it.
That night you turn the coin over in your palm, feel the rough edge of the stamp, and wind the vine three times around the lamp hook until it holds. In the morning the shutters are back on their pins, and the poppies have dropped their petals across the blue cloth you spread out to dry the seed, every one of them open.
