Purple peony bouquet on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A large purple peony blooms at the centre of a bouquet, with smaller buds, a deep plum rose and trailing green leaves around it. The shading is soft and realistic, with fine petal veining and gradual tonal changes across the flowers. Warm purple, mauve, plum and olive green dominate against the skin, and the stems run down the leg to form a diagonal composition.

Mam painted the peonies on the side of the waltzer carriages every spring, before the fair left the coast road, and she never once let me hold the brush that counted. I was nine, and my job was mixing the plum, dragging a dab of lamp black through the crimson until it sat the colour of a bruise going yellow at the edges.

"Too much blue," she said, without looking up. She was working on the big bloom for the Cakewalk sign, the one the wind kept trying to lift off the boards. Her hand never shook. Mine did, a little, whenever a customer leaned on the rail to watch.
Then the fair reached Scarborough, the cloud came in over the front, and the sign tore loose in the night. We found it at dawn, flung against a lamppost on the prom, the peony split straight down its middle. Mam stood looking at it for a long time with her coat buttoned wrong.
She didn't cry. She bought a paper bag of sugared almonds from the kiosk, sat on the wet kerb, and started picking the paint off the torn petals with her thumbnail until the gold centre showed through the crack. "Leave the gap," she said. "Folk will know where the wind took it." I watched the sun catch that little patch of gilt, bright as a coin dropped in the gutter, and I didn't offer to mix anything.
