Realistic chrysanthemum on a lower leg

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

A large chrysanthemum bloom with layered pink, lilac and pale grey petals sits above a green stem and leaves. The petals are shaded with soft gradients and fine highlights, giving a three-dimensional, realistic look. The flower fills most of the frame against pale skin, with a small leaf and stem running down toward the bottom edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The crates came in on the Tuesday before the wedding, forty stems of bronze and blush chrysanthemums wrapped in brown paper, when Mrs Okafor's order sheet clearly said peonies. I rang Doreen at the wholesaler's twice before she admitted the van had been loaded from the wrong list. By then the pink heads were already opening under the shop's striplights, and there was no time to send them back.

My aunt Ruth, who had run the shop for thirty years before her hips gave out, came in on her stick and stood over the buckets for a long time. "Chrysanthemums go on graves in some houses," she said. "Hard to say what a wedding will make of them." Then she took the sharpest knife from the drawer, stripped the lower leaves from every stem, and told me to stand them in cold water in the back room where nobody would fuss over them.

The bride came in on the Friday, tired and laughing, having heard about the mix-up from the vicar. She turned one head over in her hands, the petals layered like folded letters, grey at the edges and rosy at the centre. "My gran grew these up the side of her allotment," she said. "She'd have liked them better than peonies, honestly." So we built the bouquet from nothing but chrysanthemums, bound with green ribbon and a single sprig of rosemary tucked in at the back.

Ruth rang the shop on the Sunday evening, when the hall had emptied and the vases were in the bins. "Did they last?" she asked. I looked at the stems still standing in the back room, heavy and cool and perfectly upright. "Every one of them," I said.
