Purple rose with antlers on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A purple rose with a teal centre sits beneath a pair of gold antlers, with green leaves below and a soft pink shadow behind the flower. The rose has bold black outlines and flat, lightly shaded petals, while the antlers are drawn with darker detailing for depth. The design is centred on a plain pale forearm against a wooden floor and dark clothing.

Tom, the stag came back last night, the big one with the broken tine. I heard him at the wall around two, and by the time I got the torch on he was standing in the bed under the south window with the purple roses held up in his mouth. He wasn't eating them. He was just holding the heads high, like he was looking for something he'd dropped.

You'll remember Grandad's rose, the one he bred from a cutting he got off a funeral wreath in Bolton. Mum said it was no use, too soft for the frost. But it's the only one that flowers after Michaelmas, and the petals go almost grey under the lamp. There's a blue heart in the middle, like someone pressed a bead into it with their thumb.
I didn't shout. I set the torch down on the potting bench and sat on the upturned crate, and we looked at each other for a long while. Then he dropped the last bloom in the frosted grass, turned his head so the antlers caught the orange light from the street, and walked out through the gap in the wall as if he'd only come to check the gate was still shut.
I've put three of the cut ones in a jar on the sill, so when you're back at Christmas you can smell them with the leaves still green. Don't tell Dad about the gap. I think it's the stag's gate now, and I'd rather mend it in spring than argue with him. Come home before the frost gets into the bulbs. Nell.
