Now the island says he still walks the Ness at the turn of the year, and wherever he has stood the roses come up in the salt grass, small and stubborn, with frost dotted along their petals. Mind the triangles if you go looking. The bright one points at the sea, and the two hollow ones point at each other, and the old people say that is how you know the road home is never the one you drew.

If you find one on the strand at dusk, leave it water, and do not ask it where it has been.
