Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two forearms show mirrored butterflies with black wings dotted with white spots and filled with pink panels. Black cursive script curves around each butterfly, with one line on each arm. The pink wing panels are shaded to give depth, while the black wing areas and lettering are solid ink on the skin.

The snow had shut the high road for nine days when Agnes found her sister's boots steaming beside the kitchen range and the back door standing open on the drift. Morag had taken the lantern with the pink glass and nothing else, which meant she had gone after someone.

Agnes pulled on their father's coat and followed the tracks past the woodpile, where the wind was already filling them in. The valley folk said the inn stood where it did so no traveller would be more than a shout from a warm hearth, and that the sisters who kept it were like two halves of a painted thing. Agnes had always thought that a tidy saying for people who had never shared a bed with a sister who snored.
The tracks led to the old waystone at the beck, where as girls they had cut a paper butterfly in two and sworn each to keep a wing. Morag sat against the stone with the lantern in her lap and a carter's boy asleep on her shoulder, the cart buried to its axles behind them. She looked up without surprise. "He was walking in circles," she said. "I knew you'd come round the long way."
They carried the boy down between them, one on each side of the path, their steps matching as they always had. That evening Agnes unpinned the two paper wings from the drawer and fixed them to the kitchen wall, pink edges turned in, so they met at the nail like one butterfly with a seam down its middle. Morag stood behind her with flour on her hands and said nothing, which was the nearest either of them ever came to saying it.
