Puzzle pieces tattoo on a foot

Other · Mixed · Photo

The photograph shows the top of a bare foot with a tattoo of two interlocking puzzle pieces that appear to lift off the skin. The upper piece is shaded in greys and beige to look solid, while the lower piece is blue with a scale-like pattern and highlights. The background is a diamond-plate metal surface, and the shading gives the design a raised, illusion-like depth.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dad did the sea every winter, because the sea was the only thing in the front room that had no edges he could see. Five hundred pieces, the box said, though it was four hundred and ninety-eight by the time the cat had been at it. The picture was Porthleven harbour in a storm, all grey board and white spray, and he'd sit at the table under the lamp with the wireless murmuring about shift times while he hunted for the corners.

Mam thought it daft. She said the colliery had taken enough of his hours without him giving the rest to cardboard. But when the rest of the village went down to the Welfare on a Friday, Dad stayed with the sea, and I stayed with him, because someone had to hand him the blue ones. He had a rule: no blue piece went in until the grey around it was finished, so the water always came last.

The week before the lamp went out for good, he couldn't get the last piece to sit. It was a blue one with a row of scales, like the mackerel the boats brought in, and it sat wrong at the bottom edge of the frame. He turned it over and over under the light, muttering about cut lines, then gave up and pressed it into my palm. "You do it, love. Your hands are smaller."

It went in with a click I still hear. I didn't look at the picture after that, only at the lamp, and at the way he laughed, once, low, as though a joke had finally been let out of the room.
