Small fleur-de-lis tattoo on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small, solid black fleur-de-lis sits on the outer ankle, just above the heel. The motif has a filled silhouette with a pointed central petal and curled side petals, with no visible shading or fine detail. The bare foot rests on a pale green paper sheet, which provides a plain background.

The band at the Lys Ballroom had been stuck on the same slow waltz since eleven, and the floor was already sticky with spilt lemonade and rain carried in on shoes. You stood by the cloakroom with a borrowed coat over your arm and your ticket between two fingers, its corners softened from being checked twice. Teodor was meant to meet you by the piano at half past ten. He worked in the customs house on the quay and always smelled faintly of sealing wax and cigarette paper. By midnight the piano lid was shut and the stools were upturned on the tables, and you had watched three men pretend not to look at the empty chair you had saved. Marguerite from the cloakroom passed you a cup of tea without asking and said the Ostend boat had been held at the sandbank, which was the sort of excuse that made a man late for a dance and no one else.

He came in at ten to one with his cap in his hand and rain on his collar. He had a new stamp cut from brass, because the old one had worn to a blur, and he pressed it onto the back of your ticket across the cloakroom counter, rocking it once so the lily came out sharp. "Now it means something," he said. Then the bandleader counted in, the slow waltz started over, and the two of you went out onto the boards before anyone could tell you it was too late, the damp ticket folded in your pocket with the fresh black lily already drying on it.
