Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows the quadratic formula written in black, with a yellow Pac-Man on the left appearing to consume the start of the equation and a blue ghost on the right. The linework is bold and clean with flat fills and no visible shading. The ink is mostly colour, with black text and outlines, and the design sits centrally along the forearm against a pale pavement.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every lock on the Cam had a sum painted on its beam that year, and Ada Pell was the only one who could work them out in her head while the water rose. She was nine, the barge was called the Patience, and her father had told her that the canal kept its own accounts. Nobody argued with the canal.

The trouble began at Stourbridge Lock, where the beam had been repainted over the summer. The equation sat in fresh black letters, minus b, plus or minus the root of b squared, and at the front of it sat a round yellow thing with a wedge cut out of its face, eating the minus sign as if it were bread. Behind it a pale blue ghost drifted along the water, patient as a heron, waiting for the numbers to come loose.

Ada climbed onto the gate and shouted the answer. The yellow mouth swallowed that too. Her father laughed until he saw the ghost turn towards the barge and its eyes go white with what looked like hunger. He poled hard, but the water slowed beneath them, the way water does when it has decided something.

So Ada did what the old bargees did and gave the canal what it wanted. She took off her shoe, wrote the formula on its sole in chalk, and stepped onto the beam. The yellow mouth closed on the numbers, the ghost turned to follow the sound, and the lock gates swung open with nothing left to count.
