Martini glass on the ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A martini glass with an olive on a cocktail pick sits on the outer side of an ankle. The outline is drawn in thin, uniform black linework, with a small solid dot marking the olive. The close framing and plain skin background keep the tattoo as the clear focus.

I was sixteen that August and had been trusted with the shaker for exactly eleven days.

The guests on the top terrace were retired colonels and their wives, who liked their gin cold and their gossip colder. Dennis, who mended the deckchairs and had a bad knee, came up each evening at six to lean on the rail and ask for a martini, dry, with the olive. He never drank it. He only watched the glass sweat on the wood until the light went out over the harbour wall.
On the last night of the month the sea came over the slipway and the lamps failed all along the front. I carried two glasses out in the dark by feel, one hand on the rail, and found Dennis sitting exactly where he always sat. The olive had gone soft and grey in its brine. I set the second glass beside his, and he said, quite steadily, that he'd have it when the tide turned.
We waited together until the water drew back down the slipway. The olive stayed on its pick between us, and neither of us touched it.
